AncestryDNA Helper Extension was developed as a private tool to aide Jeff Snavely in his own family research. Jeff shares this useful tool with the genealogical community so others can benefit from the tool’s capabilities. It is distributed with the caveat that bugs and enhancements will be addressed on a time permitting, best effort basis.

Attention Apple Mac users

Unfortunately, at this time the AncestryDNA Helper Extension is not working on the Mac. After a Chrome browser update, there appears to be a conflict between the AncestryDNA Helper Extension and the Chrome browser on the Mac. If you have any insight into the problem, please post on Yahoo Groups AncestryDNA Discussion.

In the interim, if you wish to work on a PC, you can copy the database from the Mac to the PC. That way you do not have to SCAN all your tests again. If you do not know how to do this, follow the instructions on this support page.

AncestryDNA Helper Extension will unlock some of the power needed to get the most out of your Ancestry.com DNA matches. This tool is useful if you have access to just one Ancestry.com DNA test or if you have access to many Ancestry.com tests. As more and more people have their DNA tested through Ancestry.com, you are able to analyze all your matches and discover relationships hidden in their family trees.

Once the scanning process is complete, you can download your list of matches and pedigree charts as .csv files for analyzing them in a spreadsheet or database program. You can also use the additional search features added to the top of your matches list to search for matches by usernames or exact/similar surnames. The “ancestors of matches” report includes an incidence value for each row that calculates how frequently people with the same name and a similar birth year appear among your matches. This value can be useful for detecting possible common lines of descent.

If you have multiple DNA tests under your account, a new shared match icon will appear next to each match allowing you to easily see which other test(s) also match this same result by hovering your mouse over this icon. You can compare two or three of your tests to each other using the compare features at the bottom of your DNA Home Page.
